How much does a website cost?
There are several different types of website cost and these can be divided up in two different ways:
Your time vs money - either you can put time and effort into creating good quality website copy and supplying electronic images, or this is included in the website design or creation costs

Setup costs vs design costs vs build costs vs ongoing maintenance and marketing costs.

For most businesses the hidden cost of website maintenance and marketing is often more than the initial website design cost. This is especially true if the ongoing website maintenance and marketing costs are not considered from the beginning.

Website Set-up Costs
When setting up a new website, the following costs need to be considered
[click these links for more detail]

Domain Name Costs

The cost of acquiring a domain name is usually minimal for .com.biz.info.org.uk or .co.uk domain names but a little more for .gb.net or .gb.com domain names. This is a recurring small cost every year or every 2/5 years.
Acquiring a 'good' short domain name may cost a lot more if this is bought of someone selling the name they have already registered.
www.Harris.gb.net will source or transfer a domain name for you.

Hosting Costs

A website requires hosting somewhere. Hosting costs will vary from about £20/year to over £200/year. Free hosting is not worthwhile - any small saving in hosting cost is more than lost in marketing costs.
www.HARRIS.gb.net generally offer hosting at £10.00 per month/£120.00 year payable in advance.

Graphic Design Costs

Almost all websites require graphic design to some level. If you already have a logo and a business colour scheme then a large amount of the design work has already been done as it is important for the website image or branding to complement printed material and other media.
Sometimes extra work is required in producing other graphic/dynamic content (enhanced graphics, animated menus, bespoke images) and this will usually add to the total cost.
www.HARRIS.gb.net can utilise our photographic experience and library to provide you with contemporary and individual content tailored to your site.

Copy Writing

Someone has to actually compose the page copy or text to go on the website. This is usually best done by the client, so the client has to consider the costs of their own time to do this, or employ a copywriter.
www.HARRIS.gb.net can supply full website copy writing services on almost any subject but this would be charged as a specific extra to any website design quotation. Our standard proposals assume the client provides the page copy in electronic format for us to use to create the webpages.

Website Marketing Costs

Getting listed is (in our opinion) quick and easy, although it can take some weeks or months for the big search engines to list some sites. Getting highly ranked is now harder and is known as search engine optimisation. All websites written by www.HARRIS.gb.net will feature in the search engines, but extra ongoing marketing work will be required in competitive markets. We can arrange this as an extra cost feature if this is required.

Ongoing Costs

Website updating costs
A website is a marketing tool. An out of date website gives a poor image. Therefore if your website contains time dependent information it needs updating. There are several ways (with differing costs) of handling this:

  • Write the website to require minimal updates (the most cost effective solution).
  • For quarterly / annual updates, ask us to make the changes. www.HARRIS.gb.net suggest that you budget between £20-£50 per page addition/update. A full site revamp would need to be quoted for but will depend on the amount of content changed (eg budget £150 for a small site). Because we use a templated approach, a fresh look to your www.HARRIS.gb.net site may cost less than you think.
  • Annual Maintenance Contract If you envisage frequent content changes and a reasonable number of website alterations (to page structure) per year you may prefer a Maintenance Contract. For example some of our clients gradually expand their websites; starting with a simple web presence, other functionality is gradually added such as online payments, a gallery, a wiki or a forum/bulletin board. Generally you should allow £20-£30 per month for this service (dependent on the number of likely updates agreed).
  • Use our online Content Management System (CMS). The license for this service is specific to each domain and incurs a one off cost of £40. In addition budget a further one-off set-up fee of £20 for each page on your site that you have configured to use CMS. You will then be able to upload text and picture content to defined fields, directly from your web browser. This system is password protected. This is a good option if you have the time, and your site's content is likely to change, but the page structure is likely to remain unaltered. Despite the additional up-front fee, this option will be the cheapest solution in the long-run to those that need to keep their site up to date with frequent real world changes in their business. www.HARRIS.gb.net will continue to work with you to support this feature, and after we're up and running, subsequent reconfigurations can be made for £20 per page updated.
  • We have already mentioned the recurring domain name renewal and hosting costs.
As you can see it is difficult to be too prescriptive regarding costs. Generally the biggest variables are design time and maintenance obligations rather than the total number of pages. That said though, paradoxically, as a rule of thumb estimate between £75-£100 per page for small to medium sites, although the likely cost will generally be below this rough and ready measure.

Your best bet is to contact us so we can give a firm, no obligation quote based on your specific needs and requirements.

Please note that the figures given on this page are for your guidance only and are not binding and are subject to change at any time. Any changes to initial fees will be advised to customers prior to any renewal's due date. Please contact www.HARRIS.gb.net if you require a firm quote.
